Update: ETIAS from 2025

On 5 September 2018, the European Council adopted a regulation establishing a European travel information and authorisation system (ETIAS). This system should prevent travel to the EU by travellers not subject to visa requirements who pose a threat to public order, national security or the international relations of the Netherlands or one of the Schengen countries.
Do american or canadian nationls need a visa for the Netherlands and how can they apply?
EU Commision

ETIAS travel authorisation is required to enter a Schengen member state from mid-2025. All visitors who do not currently need a visa to enter Europe are expected to register with ETIAS. This gives them permission to visit all countries that are part of the Schengen zone.

As of today travellers can apply for a pre-travel verification. But unlike an ETIAS the provided information will not be shared with the border authorities.

Pre-travel verifications are checked through provided up-to-date information in regards to the entry rules for Schengen member states/ countries. The check will provide you with an offcial overview of your information and decide whether travel is permitted and extra information that might be needed in order to do so.

Proof can still be requested by local border authorities and will therefore always be advised to be brought along when travelling.

Pre-travel verification for groups

When travelling per group it is good to make sure all travelers all well prepared. Every traveller would be able to apply for a verification seperately or one person in possesion of every travelers data can apply for the group.
